Happy Teachers’ Day

In the past 25 years I have spent time in school equal to I have spent at home. In most of our’s life there will a person who have inspired us the most. Mostly it will be our teacher. From the very first day where we step in to nursery till we stop our studies, may be in 18s or even in 50s, still ur teacher will always be the best for you.

Teachers, they educate us, care for us and guide us to reach our goals. Next to our parents our teachers are the only people who care more about us. I really felt it from my school life until today. We have many friends; out of them we have best friends. That doesn’t mean that we don’t like or don’t care for other friends. Some attitude, characteristic makes us love some friends more. Same applies for teachers too. Even though we come across many teachers in our life some becomes our favourite and best in our life.

My life has no exceptions. I too met many teachers till nursery up to grade 13 and again in undergraduate life as well. But the teachers I like the most are my dancing teacher Mrs Thayananthi Vimalachandran, My lectures in undergraduate life Ms Anjalie Gamage and Mr Samantha Rajapakshe.

My dancing teacher not only treats me as her student but also like her own child. She made me love dancing and now dance is like a part and partial of my life. I am learning bharatha from her for the past 15 years. She teaches us with care and love. She made me feel nothing is impossible by even teaching me the most difficult steps very simply and training me on that. I still remember the days how she cared about my exams and my arangettram more than I did. She has devoted her self for the art of dancing and she teaches this divine art as a service but not for money. When ever she performs and show us some movements I feel as if Lord Nadaraj has come down and is performing in front of me. Such a beauty and grace. Actually no words to say it. Even though she is a legend and a great dancer she is always down to earth and treats every one equally. I always pray lord nadaraja to shower his blessings always on my teacher.

The next teacher who has inspired a lot is my lecturer Ms Anjalie Gamage. She has taught me programming in my first year. She was the role model for me. She inspired me to become a lecturer. The way she smartly come to class, teaches and her each and every action is amazing. Specially the way she advice the students and help them to the maximum is amazing. I always wanted to become a lecturer like. Even though I have reached the goal but still I cannot be smart as her. She is unique always. Indeed I am really happy and proud today to be her own junior staff member.
The next teacher who I admire the most is also a lecturer at my institute Mr Samantha Kumara Rajapakshe. He did mathematic, algorithm analysis and operating system module for me when I was an under graduate. He is simply great. He is so very down to earth and never hurt the feelings of any students. He is always ready to help the students always. He guided me to do a good research in my final year and helped me publish many papers as well. The guidance and motivation he has given is immense. I am really lucky to be his junior now and still I am learning from him many new things.

I am really happy to have so many loving and caring teachers in my life. Each one of them are unique and no one can ever replace their places too. I will always remember them in my life with gratitude. I can not give any thing in this world as the return for what I have gained from my teacher. The things I have gained and learnt are in valuable and priceless. All I would be able to do is to remember them always, respect them and pray god to bless them with always happiness and success for ever in their life.
My dear teachers thank u so much for guiding me, inspiring me and make me who I am today. I am fortunate enough that I had a loving, caring teacher like you.

The art of conversation is dying

Nowadays the preference for the electronic communication devices has increased a lot. The world of science has improved and due to this many new inventions are smiling around the world. The words email, chat and sms are very common and popular among the teen agers these days. Each and every house has a telephone and even a computer too. So people find it easier to make a call to anyone they wish to pass the message or just have a chat. They even find that sending an email or a sms is much easier and quicker rather than going and knocking at the doors to pass the message.
Nowadays if you get out of your house and step in the road you will see 10% of the people hanged on their phones and 80% of them will be sending sms. It’s very much clear that the people have less direct interaction with one another. No one these days wishes to have a face to face meeting. It is true that people hardly find leisure time now. But even if they get free time they wish to get them selves engaged in some other work than visiting their relatives or friends.
The most popular mean of communication today is online chat. With the growth of technology almost all have access to internet. People prefer this mode very much, since it is very easy. They find it easier to sit in their room and having chat with their friends and relatives. Some feel that this reduces the time and energy spent while going to a place and meeting them to have the same conversation.
These modern means of communication is sometime may be good and beneficial. But it is killing the lovely art of conversation. When you are having a conversation with a person in present you have more passion on the topic you speak about. Your facial expressions will add more meaning to your conversation. These are dead in these electronic modes of communication. It is some time even bad for your health. Little by little people will not have interaction at all and will become isolated. Even they could get mentally affected in the long term. Lovingness also dies. People will even lose interest in their own life and will live for the sake of living. Death of the art of conversation is a real threat to this world which enjoys more the invention of science.

A Glory Has Departed

When I was in grade 12 as usual I participated in the inter school speech competition and I was selected to participate in the zonal level competition. I was asked to prepare a narrative speech. My English teacher Ms Tharmalingam selected a lovely speech for me. It was the speech given by Jawaharlal Nehru about Mahathma Gandhi, "The Glory Has Departed". It was indeed an inspiring one. I still love to read that. I wanted to share it with you all too friends. In the zonal level I was awarded the second place too :)

[Editor's Note: Jawaharlal Nehru was a scholar, writer, and the first Prime Minister of India. This speech was delivered on February 2, 1948 before the constituent Assembly at New Delhi, 3 days after the assassination of Mahatma Gandhi. Nehru expresses the shock and grief of the people of India at the loss of their beloved leader.]

We praise people in well-chosen words and we have some kind of a measure for greatness. How shall we praise him and how shall we measure him, because he was not of the common clay that all of us are made of? He came, lived a fairly long span of life and has passed away. No words of praise of ours in this House are needed, for he has had greater praise in his life than any living man in history.

And during these two or three days since his death he has had the homage of the world; what can we add to that? How can we praise him, how can we who have been children of his, and perhaps more intimately his children than the children of his body, for we have all been in some greater or smaller measure the children of his spirit, unworthy as we were?

A glory has departed and the sun that warmed and brightened our lives has set and We shiver in the cold and dark. Yet, he would not have us feel this way. After all, that glory that we saw for all these years, that man with the divine fire, changed us also--and such as we are, we have been molded by him during these years; and out of that divine fire many of us also took a small spark which strengthened and made us work to some extent on the lines that he fashioned.

And so if we praise him, our words seem rather small and if we praise him, to some extent we also praise ourselves.

Great men and eminent men have monuments in bronze and marble set up for them, but this man of divine fire managed in his life-time to become enshrined in millions and millions of hearts so that all of us became somewhat of the stuff that he was made of, though to an infinitely lesser degree. He spread out in this way all over India not in palaces only, or in select places or in assemblies but in every hamlet and hut of the lowly and those who suffer. He lives in the hearts of millions and he will live for immemorial ages.

What then can we say about him except to feel humble on this occasion? To praise him we are not worthy-to praise him whom we could not follow adequately and sufficiently. It is almost doing him an injustice just to pass him by with words when he demanded work and labor and sacrifice from us; in a large measure he made this country, during the last thirty years or more, attain to heights of sacrifice which in that particular domain have never been equaled elsewhere. He succeeded in that. Yet ultimately things happened which no doubt made him suffer tremendously though his tender face never lost its smile and he never spoke a harsh word to anyone. Yet, he must have suffered- suffered for the failing of this generation whom he had trained, suffered because we went away from the path that he had shown us. And ultimately the hand of a child of his-for he after all is as much a child of his as any other Indian-a hand of the child of his struck him down.

Long ages afterwards history will judge of this period that we have passed through. It will judge of the successes and the failures-we are too near it to be proper judges and to understand what has happened and what has not happened. All we know is that there was a glory and that it is no more; all we know is that for the moment there is darkness, not so dark certainly because when we look into our hearts we still find the living flame which he lighted there. And if those living flames exist, there will not be darkness in this land and we shall be able, with our effort, remembering him and following his path, to illumine this land again, small as we are, but still with the fire that he instilled into us.

He was perhaps the greatest symbol of the India of the past, and may I say, of the India of the future, that we could have had. We stand on this perilous edge of the present between that past and the future to be and we face all manner of perils and the greatest peril is sometimes the lack of faith which comes to us, the sense of frustration that comes to us, the sinking of the heart and of the spirit that comes to us when we see ideals go overboard, when we see the great things that we talked about somehow pass into empty words and life taking a different course. Yet, I do believe that perhaps this period will pass soon enough.

He has gone, and all over India there is a feeling of having been left desolate and forlorn. All of us sense that feeling, and I do not know when we shall be able to get rid of it, and yet together with that feeling there is also a feeling of proud thankfulness that it has been given to us of this generation to be associated with this mighty person. In ages to come, centuries and maybe millennia after us, people will think of this generation when this man of God trod on earth and will think of us who, however small, could also follow his path and tread the holy ground where his feet had been. Let us be worthy of him.

A day out with my friends…

It was a lovely Saturday. As I remember the 12th September, 2009. My friend Yaamini, Chayini (previously blogged as Paavai) and my self visited the books exhibition held at BMICH. Chayini went to BMICH early and my friend and I joined after attending the lectures that morning. We went to BMICH around 11.45 am. Chayini was waiting at the entrance of the main block inside BMICH premises. Until we go there she had had an ice cream and a coca cola. :)

As we went there, we couldn't get inside the main block as there was a huge crowd. Then we went to the next section where there was Expo graphics, Poobalsingham, Jeya book center etc. On the way to that block there were food stalls of Mount Lavenia hotel and another hotel. My both the friends go hungry as they saw that. But since it was a vegetarian day they would only have a look at those foods. :)

As we stepped into the Expo graphics my friend started screaming, saying she can't get into that massive crowd. At last Chayini and I managed to take her in. We were searching for few books and at last couldn't find them. Then we moved from there to another stalls. My friend even didn't step into some shops as it was so crowded. I however managed to buy few lady birds books and stationeries for my brothers and my sister's kids. Chayini managed buy few kavithai books and stationary where other friend bought some cookery recipe books.. :)

Then we came out of that block and went to the bargain shops. A really interesting thing happened there. There we saw a CD shop which had Sinhala movies. Chayini wanted to buy a movie CD. But unfortunately she forgot the name, but remembered the name of the director. Poor sales boy without knowing that Chayini didn't know to read Sinhala gave a lot of CD for her to see whether the one she wants is there. Chayini stood staring at the CDs. Then the guy understood the situation and started reading the names one by one. But what Chayini wanted was not there. :(

The time was around two o'clock as we left that place. My other friend started to complain that she is hungry. We went in search of vegetarian foods and at last only found Maggie noodles :(. With huge long faces we three had to have noodles (Maggie 2 minutes) as our lunch. Then we visited some more stalls in the main block. The book "The boy next Door" by Enid Blyton, was not available in the places where we searched for that and have to leave without the book. :( Then on the way we saw a person selling candy floss and my friend and Chayini wanted to have it very badly. The funniest part was that a 10 year kid saw that and was just passing by, but ladies of 20s wanted candy floss. :P As we bought the candy floss and turned we met our It programming lecturer with her kid. She couldn't stop laughing at us and these two were also embarrassed as we saw her. As she was one of my favorite lecturers I was bit sad that we couldn't have a chat with her. Then they had the candy floss standing under a tree. Then after few more stalls, we left the place around 3.30 in the evening. The most interesting part was that Chayini and my friend enjoyed foods equally to the books at the BOOK FAIR... :)) . Even though only three of us went there, we really had a very nice time there. It is another unforgettable day for me.

Blooming again to join the garden

This flower bloomed two years back. I was highly taken away by my friend paavai's blog. This made me think to write my own blog. As I had plenty of time those days, I started writing this as a hobby. I posted few posts. Then as I was loaded with my studies and work I couldn't write continuously. I posted few articles when ever time permitted.

Now again as I am done with my studies for now, thought of continuing the nangai page. Hope I will be able to write continuously without long breaks again.

My First Day at SLT

I was supposed to join SLT on the 14th of June as I promised. So on the 13th evening, i prepared all my things and was waiting anxiously to step int my new job. The next day morning was a lovely day in my career. I got up early in the morning and got ready to leave home by 7.30m in the morning. My best friend promised me to take me to the office as I didn't know
the sections in the office. My friend picked me at around 7.40 am. and we reached SLT head office at around 8.25am. As I was asked to come to the HR division my friend drooped me at HR and went to his section. The person in charge of IT and Network Officers asked me to wait some time to get my appointment letter. And then he took me to the Admin section to get my ID done. So I gave my details there and they asked me to collect the ID by 4 o'clock in the evening. Then since I was appointed to work at Moratuwa training Centre I was asked stay there in the head office tha day and to collect my documents and to go to the training centre on the next day. After I returned back t the HR i waited the whole day in the HR reception and first got my appointment letter and signed the contract. Then around 4.30 pm I got my ID card and activated it. Then I had to wait till my friend finishes the work and left the place around 5.30 pm. My friend dropped me at home and went home. It was an unforgettable day in my life.

I also would like to note down about my first day at Moratuwa.I started from home early morning at 7.30 and reached Moratuwa around 8.10 am. I met my friend Kanchana there. I knew her before because she was an instructor for me at SLIIT. I first met the engineer admin of Moratuwa TTc and then he introduced the engineer Accesss Technology division, to whom I had to report. He briefed me my duties and showed me my cabin. Then I got some new lovely friends there. I got new friends who were not only my friends but also my well wishers and care takers in my office. I wished that I would stay with these lovely friends for ever till I quit my job st SLT. (Later which was only a dream). I felt the love of a sister in them.

A fine day in my career :) :) :)

On the 30th of June I was at Virtusa on skill training, building a paper castle. I got a call from SLT saying that I have been selected as an IT and Network Officer and have to come there on the next day to collect my letters. So on the next day morning I went to SLT head office with my best friend. I was there by 8.45 and I waited at the HR division. Around 10.30 we had a meeting and was handed over our confirmation notice letters. They informed me that I have been selected as a trainer to Moratuwa Telecom training Centre. They asked the date on which I would be joining. And I promised to join on the 14th of July as I needed some time to resign my current job and join there. And then I left the place around 11.15. On this day also my best friend helped me down and gave me send off. I was extremely happy on that day and didn't have words to express my happiness. My wish from small days was to become a lecturer in future. And i was overjoyed to hear that my work is conducting trainings. I wish and hope that I can do a good job there. But even though I was happy about joining there, I also felt sad that I will have to leave my frnds at Virtusa. But anyway I thought that I even can keep in touch with them for ever.

Third Interview at SLT :) :) :)

On the fourth of June morning I was at Virtusa on my first day of induction training. Around 9 a clock I got a call from SLT saying that I have been selected from the exam that was held on the 2nd of May. And I have to attend the third interview on the next day, the 5th of June. I was extremely happy and didn't know what to do. And then decided to attend the interview on the next day. I had my interview at 12 o'clock. On the 4th evening my best friend came home and he arranged my file to take to the interview. And helped me in preparing how to answer the question and face the interview. I was so much scared because this time there will be people from HR and also the sectional heads. On the 5th around 10.45 I got ready and went to the church first. Then along with my father went to the interview. it was at SLT head office. When I went to the office my best friend received me at the reception and took me to the HR division where the interview was. Then at 12.35 I was called and I went and met the panel. There were about 6 people in the panel including Mr.Lakmal (who was section head of Training and Development at that time). They asked me few question and I had a discussion for about 10 minutes only. And they told that if I am selected I will be informed. When I left the room I had a small hope that there is chance for me to get selected, because I had answered the entire question thrown on me correctly and with courage. So then my best friend took me down stairs and gave me the send off.

Second interview at SLT :)

On the 2nd of May I had my selection test at SLT, which was a 4 hours exams including one hour of practical exam. The day previous to the exam i got ready by referring to my notes and browsing net. My best friend another friend helped me in preparing for the exam. On the 2nd morning I got up early in the morning and went to the exam with my father. One of my friends too joined me to the exam. It was held at Welsiara Trainng Centre at 10 o'clock. Since I was traveling from Dehiwala I started early around 8.30 and was at the venue by 9.15.

Around 9.45 we were taken into the auditorium where the exams were held. I got the first number in the list and I was seated in the first row. Then in the first hour I had my practical exams. One was programming and the other was networking. I managed to do the both. And then I did the theory exams. Around 2.15 i left back from Weleisara. The written exams were bit tuff and anyhow I managed to do it. But even though I did well, I had a fear that whether I will be selected or not. It was because there were 116 people and all were much senior to me. I wished that I should be selected and left the place with the hope that I should be selected.

My interview at SLT

I applied for the post of System operators at Sri Lanka Telecom(SLT) in the end of February. In the middle of March I got a letter from SLT saying that I have been selected for the first interview. When I saw this I was really happy and also was overjoyed. It is because I really really wanted to join SLT and was thinking I can't get it buy now. But when I saw the letter I was at the top of happiness. The Interview was on the 26th of March. On the 25th of March I got my Diploma Certificate from SLIIT as that was basic requirement they looked for. On the 25th evening my best friend helped me to get my certificate arranged in a proper manner to take it for the interview the next day.

On the 26th morning I got up early in the morning and was so tensed. I got ready by 8.45. The interview was at 9.30 at Moratuwa Training center. I left home with my dad at 9,
Went to church and when I reached Moratuwa training center it was exactly 9.30. Thinking that I was late I rushed to the reception. To my excitement there was a long queue with about 80 people in front. By asking from a person in the queue I got to know that they all have come to attend the interview and they are from the tie slot 9.30. I too joined the queue and few more people came after me as well. But there were about another hundred waiting for the next slot. By looking at the queue I thought that there is a high possibility for me to get rejected. Because most of them were my seniors at my campus and also pass outs. So I thought that they will be given priority.

First I was sent to two ladies to get doubled checked my certificates copies with the original. Then again I had to wait about for one hour in another place. There they had
Several panel with two board members. One by one the candidates were sent to the panels and each were like questioned for about 20 to30 minutes. When the time was
Moving I got more and more tensed because I was wondering what will they ask and how good I will be in answering and stuff. As getting a job here was my dream I didn't wanted to perform bad. Finally my turn came and I went in. There were two engineers (as what I guessed, but not so sure) in the panel. They asked few questions from me which I managed to answer very well. To my luck I got very simple questions. I got few tech questions and more were like to test my attitude. It was like to check my willingness to work, about my communication skills, willingness to learn new things and so forth. When I was entering the room I was so tensed and when the questions were thrown I got more confidence. And I was interviewed for about 20 to 25 minutes. And then I was said that if I'm selected I'll be called for an exam. I walked off with the hope that I will be selected and I was also praying god that I should get through.

Note:
After few weeks I got a telegram from SLT saying that I have been selected for the second interview. I was extremely happy.

The film that touched my heart....

Tare Zameen Par

Last week i got a movie from my dear friend Chay and she recommend that it was a superb film. Since i had exams i couldn't watch it at that time i got it from her. I got the chance to watch it last night only. Wow. What a superb film. It touched my heart very much. I was really taken away with the acting of that little kid Ishaan.

This is a story of a boy who found extreme difficulty in learning in his tender age and later on how he managed to get rid of it. This boy Ishaan was the youngest in a family. He had an elder brother who was very bright in studies as well as in sports. But this little fellow was the last in class. Because of this his teachers as well as father use to scold him and punish him all the time. But no one tried to find out what his real problem was. He was extremely good in paintings. His mother was a bit kind towards him. She use to take his side when ever his father scolds him. She
use to teach and help him with his studies. But unfortunately this little kid wasn't able to grasp the lessons. He found difficulties especially in identifying words and letters. He had already failed grade three and his principal complained his parent that he might do the same this time too. She also told them that she will be in a position to spell him out of the school if he fails this time. In order to overcome this problem his father decided to change his school. He put him in a school which was very far from there place. Because of that the kid had to stay in the boarding. He refused to go there. Even his mother didn't like sending him there. But his father by force sent him there. This boy found it very difficult to stay n the boarding. He even found it difficult to get ready to go to school in the morning. He didn’t' know even how to put the tie. All these days at home his mother use to dress him up and send to school. On Saturdays his parents visited him. But he was angry with him and refused to speak to him. His class teachers was also very harsh towards him. One day in his art class he got punished for looking out of the window and enjoying the beautiful view of nature. After that he gradually started loosing interested in art too.

After sometime his art master got transferred and a new teacher came to the school. On the first day at the school the teacher sang song and danced with the student. But Ishaan stayed back alone. Since he didn't wanted to move along with others. He only had one friend. At that time Ishaan didn't know that this master is the person who is going to change his life. This new master gave full freedom to the students. He asked them what ever the thought that come in to their mind. All were painting except for Ishaan. He found difference in this child and stated analyzing about him. And after some time he found the cause for it. And from then onwards he stated to
work accordingly to change Ishaan. He told stories in the class which would encourage him. He got the special permission to train him individually in a way that he could capture the basics easily. And he succeeded in that. Later the art master held a competition among the whole school including the teachers. As the first place Ishaan's art was selected and his art master’s painting won the second place. Ishaan had defeated his master in panting. The whole school applauded for Ishaan and the all floated in over joy. The principle announced that the Ishaan's art will be published as the cover of the school book. From that day onwards Ishaan had great improvement in his studies too. He managed the pass the term end exams with good marks as well. When his parents came to collect his progress report they were amused to hear the class teachers comments. They all praised Ishaan, where the years before that his parents had only heard complains about Ishaan. They were extremely happy an his father was in tears. He thanked Ishaan's art master for the great help he had done.

What an interesting film!!!!!!. I enjoyed the film like no other. I don't even have words to describe it. When Ishaan's painting was selected as the best in school I too stared clapping forgetting where i am and it was a film only. It made me feel as i was among the audience. The film is simply super.

I hope that all of you who had not seen this also will get a chance to see that and enjoy to get the real feel of that.

My First Interview.

On the 10th of December 2007 I got a call from Virtusa. They told me that my name has been recommended by our institute for the post if Placement Engineer at Virtusa. (They told it is kind of training) I was so surprised. And they wanted me to attend an interview on the 13th of December 2007 at 10.00 am. From that moment I was anxiously waiting for that day.

Since this was my first interview I was bit tensed. I didn't know how to prepare. I asked my best friend and he gave me some tips, how to get prepared and what things to take with me. I arranged my certificates in a file and had a copy of CV also in that. Then arranged my dress. And went to sleep early since I have to get up early in the morning.

13th was a Thursday. I got ready in the morning and wanted to start early so that I can be there on time. Unfortunately my father couldn’t drop me that day, because he had to attend his aunt’s funeral. So he arranged another vehicle. On the way I had to pick two of my friends too. After that I also wanted to get my character certificate from my school. Since it was getting late my best friend had collected. I started at 8.30 am from my house. I picked my friends and went to my best friend’s place. She was waiting in the door step expecting me. She wished me with a warm hug and gave the certificate to me. We started from there at 9 and were at Virtusa reception by 9.15. It seemed too early. We were the first people to go there. The receptionist over there took my identity card and gave me the visitor’s pas. He then directed me to the place where the interview was about to be held. That room was place where they have board meetings. After some time some more students from our institute came there. All were tensed and wondering what sort of an interview they are going to have. Around 10.15 three gentlemen and a lady walked in. They made us seated around the table. They told that we have been already chosen from the scholars list of SLIIT. So they didn’t want to test us technically. Instead they told that they are going to test our communication skills. I was bit happy with that statement. Because I always prefer that kind of interviews.

It was like a group discussion. First of all they gave each and every one of us different topics and wanted to do a short presentation on that. The question I got was, “How will I prepare to become the batch top in the institute”. Doing a presentation on that topic wasn’t a big difficult thing for me. Indeed I was very happy to do that because that is my dream too. I presented my ideas and thoughts. After every one presented they divided us into four groups and each group was taken separately to different places. In groups they gave us topics to argue for or against that topic. In our group we got three topics. One was “If there is a rule saying that the marriages will expire in 7 years and after that you have to renew it, will it be a good or bad thing?” The next topic was “Do you believe in love at first sight?” And the last topic was “DO you prefer arranged marriage or love marriage?”

It was quite a good discussion. We really came up with many points for and against the topics. Each of had different views on the topic. I strongly disagreed with the first two topics and I also preferred arranged marriages.

After all groups finished the discussion we were taken to the board room in which we were seated first and were served with refreshments. Then a lady from HR addressed us regarding the training program. At the end they told us that we will be informed the selections very soon. It was nearly 1 o’clock when they were winding up the session.

When I was returning home I had a small believe that there are possibilities for me to be selected because I felt that I did a good job there. I expressed my thoughts and ideas innovatively. Anyhow my first interview was an unforgettable experience for me. And also I enjoyed it a lot. It was really very cool than what I expected.

Note: After two weeks time I got a call from there saying that I have been selected as a placement Engineer.

Smoking should be banned in all public places

Nowadays many people smoke in public places very often. This is because maybe they aren't aware of the effects of smoking. I think as a coin has two sides this topic also has both for and against arguments.

Firstly I would like to look into the favorable side. As the results of a lot of reserach, people say that a smoke-free environment helps a person to be very healthy. They not only help to reduce the long-term dangers of second hand smoking but, they also make life more pleasant. Smoking can cause many dangerous diseases such as lung cancer and heart attacks. It is observed that the number of patients admitted to the hospital due to smoking -related illness has dropped a lot in a smoke free area. But at the same time there weren't any changes in other normal areas. Doctors say that every year they spent a lot of money to treat people who get illa by amoking.

Another point in favor of this is that smoking in public should violate the mind of the children. As everyone knew people of all ages visit public places. Smoking plays an enormous role in making cigarette smoking appealing and attractive to kids. Children easily adopt habiths good or bad from elders. And when they see elders smoking they also try to do that without knowing the bad effects. A smoker can be easily identified among non-smokers from his appearance. For he'll have dark colored lips and eyes which looks ugly(Note that some non smokers also have this kind of appearence due to some other reasons).

When looking into the against arguments firstly, we should think that smokers also have feeling too. It is their body. They are smoking. Mean while they didn't ask others or force others to smoke. Just because a person sees a smoker he will not get addicted. As we all know when we try to force a person not to do a thing, then he'll intend do it again. At last this can end up in chaos. In my view point banning smoking in public places would induce them to smoke in secret. The government should have special programs to make smokers be aware of the bad side of smoking. In one way if the government ban smoking in all public places the number of smokers will definitely reduce and as the result government may get economically affected. The government gets a lot of tax from importing and exporting tobacco and cigarettes. So banning smoking in public places also might effect the economy of the country.

From my point of view I would like to say that smoking should be banned in all public places. Though it's one's own wish to choose smoking or not anyway the environment shouldn't induce a person to get addicted to a habit. In conclusion I would say that a smoke-free environment will definitely be a gift to this world, as smoking may be a great threat to this wonderful world.

OH LEADERS!

OH LEADERS!

fly the skies, my friends,
As the bird
Soar in heaven, my friend,
With your words,
And your deeds, my friends,
Be a Leader, my friend!

Time and time again many a child has left out or ordered about, while another child leads the march or the games. This didn't happen because the left out child was less brainy or the preceding child was more intelligent. It only happened because of the presiding child knew the tactfulness of leadership, while the left out child didn't know that. Remeber, leadership isn't a talent with which one is born.
"Leaders are not born, they are made"
is a popular saying.

A true leader is very responsible, but quite easy going. He or she should be quite creative so that they know the art as to what to do if anything goes wrong. A leader should have the talent of making people listen to and obey to but should not be too demanding. Leadership takes man a llong way. A true leader blazes his way to success at the speed of light. Abraham Lincoln did not win black's their freedom because the white people loved blacks. No! He did it because he was a true leader. Winston Churchill didn't win the war because his country had a large amount of resoouirces. He won it because he was a true leader.

"The youth of today are the leaders of tomorrow". Every President, every King was a child at his early age. This is why nowadys schools seperate children into different groups and nominate leaders. This way every child gets an early chance to practice leadership, so that when the right moment comes to the child does not panic but acts his part victoriously. Everyone gets a chance to be a leader, but many do not take much interest of it or uphold and face the challenges to become a leader. We should neer miss a chance for leadership, as it is the chance of a life time that does not come every day.

Raise your hand
You're a Leader
Be a man
You'll be greater

Through flame and fire
Through hardships and leadership
Be a flame to shine in darkness
Guide your men for peace and tranquility

Raise your hand and
Be a leader

LEADERSHIP

The word prefect rings a bell in every student's life. Becoming a prefect is a long felt dream of any student. The best ones with outstanding talents are chosen and given badges. I feel is the highest honor to us by our school. The prefect system was introduced in Sri Lanka during the British rule.

Prefects play a very important role in school. They stand shoulder to shoulder with the teachers to maintain discipline daily, at school and at functions. Prefects upload the traditions of the school, which are given to them by their seniors. Prefects should remain loyal to the school, respecting the rules and regulations that govern them and carry out their duties diligently. They should work hard for higher students’ ideals and should make their institution more beautiful than when it was handed over to them.

Prefects are "Pupil leaders". These leaders must have certain qualities. Punctuality is very important. To maintain punctuality they should learn time management. A good prefect also should be initiative and must have the ability to address a gathering without any preparations. They should be intelligent, be ready to make sacrifice and be an example to others so that others will follow their foot steps.

The prefects' body should be very united and co-operative. They must be effective team members and managers. Prefects must be controlled and truthful and be confident in what ever they discharge. A prefect should understand students' psychology. Kind words are hundred times better than rude punishments. You should keep in mind that you are also a student. You must not enforce another person to do something what you will never do.

Prefects should always be alert and conscious of their duty. Our key broth should be decency, discipline and decorum. Becoming a prefect is not an easy task. There is great competition among the students to get this badge, so he/she must never misuse his/her power and duty. Prefects are held in high esteem by the students. It is a very responsible position. So prefects should always take care about what they are doing and what they are going to do. Never ask 'what this school can do for you?' but 'what we can do to this school?'

In conclusion I would like to say that prefects must promote the level of discipline and must help the administration of their school. A good prefect will definitely be a good and effective leader not only in school but also in the community too.

LEADERS ARE NOT BORN
THEY ARE MADE.
